Several weeks ago I saw many smart home lock options at a security tradeshow.
I am not convinced that installing ALL external access doors with electronic locks is a great idea. Many producers are focused on the front door lock. Controlling access when you are home is easy, what do you do when you are not home? How do you control access to tradespeople – e.g. garden maintenance, pool cleaner or painter? Wouldn’t it be great to have a smart electronic solution for those gates, access doors or entry ways for tradespeople?
The security show had many working products including electronic padlocks, cabinet locks and gate mechanisms accessed via a smart phone or tablet. The smart phone/tablet integration and operation was fairly smooth. Is it possible to have more than one App for access?
I was hoping to see an integrated electronic lock solution, collaborative software, to provide users an integrated solution that is cost effective.
Bingo, it’s was my lucky day! A tradeshow stand had an App that would open/close multiple brands and types of electronic locks. It was simple to use, and best of all it has a growing list of collaborating manufacturers. I liked the collaborative effort as their focus is seamless operation and not the lock. Great news for users.
To get a home owner to ‘go smart’ requires effort – it needs to be simple – from product to install to integration to operation. Door locks are used everyday and in reality, are probably not high on the list of priorities for owners, compared with other design/build decisions.
Make it simple to be smart!
If the status quo prevails, requiring no effort by the owner, an opportunity is missed to make their life easier.
Stay safe. Be Smart!
